Assistant General Counsel - Health Care

 

Our client, a leading health care provider in Northern California sees an Assistant General Counsel to assist the Senior Vice President & General Counsel, other more senior attorneys, and members of management by providing legal advice and counsel (including conducting or overseeing legal research, identifying new or emerging areas of risk, etc.), on a range of topics within their general practice areas. The AGC role will have subject matter expertise in Business, Tax & Governance issues.  Specifically the AGC will support business lines including ambulatory surgery center development and management, homecare and hospice, system laboratory, and system pharmacy operations.  The position is based in Sacramento, California.

The incumbent must have a minimum of 6 years significant experience in advising medical and health care clients with emphasis in a nonprofit setting.

The incumbent also will assist the Vice President, Office of the General Counsel (OGC) in managing the work of outside counsel, experts, and consultants to ensure quality and consistency of legal and consulting advice provided to the  OGC and other internal clients. This position requires attention to detail and the ability to work independently. This position also requires consulting and collaboration experience and expertise in support of department and system-wide projects, workgroups, and initiatives.

 

Experience:   

Must have demonstrated at least 6 years of significant law experience, including, primary and independent responsibility for significant transactions.  Must have a comprehensive understanding of tax-exempt healthcare entity structures including corporate and joint venture formation and ongoing operations.  Must also have experience in mergers, acquisitions, and governance of tax-exempt healthcare providers.  Other preferred experience includes regulatory requirements and other operations issues related to ambulatory surgery centers, pharmacy, laboratory and home health and hospice agencies. 

    

Special Skills:

Candidate must demonstrate effective managerial/leadership skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as the ability to translate legal complexities into terms readily understood by management and line personnel. Must be able to demonstrate strong client management and project management skills as well as the ability to work successfully both independently and within a team.
