Our client, a rapidly growing software company with marquee investors, has exclusively retained Solutus Legal Search to assist the Company in its search for the company’s first dedicated privacy counsel.  This is an outstanding opportunity to join a world-class team and advise and partner with teams across the Company.

The Privacy Counsel/Senior Privacy Counsel will work closely with engineering, product, security, sales, marketing and other teams to manage legal risk and compliance with global privacy laws and regulations.  You will help lead the development and implementation of strategies and initiatives that focus on building a scalable privacy program and you will educate and train key stakeholders on prioritizing data protection as a core value for the Company.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing a wide range of subject matter expertise and resource on privacy, security and data protection
  • Working with teams worldwide on various privacy and security initiatives
  • Partnering closely with your legal team colleagues on cross functional projects with privacy implications
  • Drafting external privacy notices and disclosures, and managing/updating internal policies and procedures to ensure compliance with global privacy laws
  • Providing guidance and interpretation on legal requirements to the engineering and product teams with respect to existing and new product features and functionality for privacy-by-design initiatives
  • Responding to customer and employee questions about their individual data rights and the Company’s processing activities
  • Drafting data protection impact assessments
  • Analyzing privacy law developments and providing analysis and guidance for implementation into business processes
  • Counseling commercial teams and business partners on data protection related provisions in contracts
  • Assisting in the formation and management of a cross functional privacy committee, on which you will play an integral role in its ongoing viability and success

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • At least 5 to 8 years of experience advising a multinational SaaS company on global data privacy regulations and laws
  • Deep experience with global privacy regulations and laws, including GDPR, the ePrivacy Directive, and CCPA-CPRA
  • A working understanding of Australian Privacy Act, HIPAA, and PIPEDA, and desire to learn LGPD and upcoming regulations and laws
  • Foundational knowledge of key security programs such as SOC2, ISO, and HIPAA
  • The passion to drive and support the Company’s privacy initiatives
  • Experience interfacing with a Data Protection Officer
  • CIPP/E and/or CIPP/US certification
  • Comfort influencing and educating colleagues on the importance of privacy and implementation of privacy initiatives, and the gravitas necessary to gain the respect of senior leaders in the Company
  • An ability to multi-task with great attention to detail in a fast growing environment
  • The versatility and confidence to take on challenges that are presented to you
  • Impeccable legal and business judgment and an ability to quickly risk-assess and prioritize
  • Excellent presence and proven ability to influence at all levels
  • An ability to communicate complex issues, both in writing and orally, with ease
  • A collaborative approach
  • A law degree, admission to practice law in California, and an excellent academic record
